Southern Ogres

The lands are not inhabited only by humans. Among the other beings dwelling there are the Ogres. They come in many kinds. The most numerous are the ogres of the warm lands.

A number of years ago it was discovered that ogres had moved into the caverns of Hamgyong Nam-Do and were mining for precious amber there. The ogre king Nyogh built himself a capitol city in the ogre fashion, the secret village Ja-Gook. He gathered to himself three ogre lords and their followers: the lesser lord Log, leader of the Grim Ogres, and the greater lords Zin-Te of the Hill Ogres and Zangze of the Marsh Ogres.

Upon hearing of this King Yuri sent Yong Chun, his trusted emissary, to negotiate a treaty with the ogres. Some days later two ogres delivered an iron-bound chest to Yuri's palace, saying that it was their king's answer. Yuri's advisers and courtiers gathered around when the package was opened, waiting to see the rare gifts that Nyogh had sent. They were horrified to discover, within the chest, the well-gnawed bones of Ambassador Yong Chun.

The battle for the amber mines commenced and continues to this day. It appears that the ogres share the same ability as humans to receive renewed life from some secret shaman, for though ogres and adventurers have slaughtered each other by the thousand, there appears to be no end to the supply of either force.

One ogre stood apart from the warfare. Ugh, a merchant among ogre-kind, sought to live in peace with humans. He traded with them, and helped gemcrafters turn raw amber into precious jewels. This was treachery in Nyogh's eyes, and Nyogh sent his thugs to kidnap Ugh. The gentle merchant was dragged to Ja-Gook and tortured. A rescue force was hastily formed, humans from Koguryo and Buya banding together to save Ugh, but time ran out. Before they reached him, Ugh was cruelly killed by his captors. Ugh's friend Nogh runs Ugh's old shop in Hamgyong Nam-Do now, but he lacks Ugh's skill with gems, merely selling ogrish beverages and buying the ginseng they are brewed from.
