Glory Carnage

The Glory Carnage was one of the most prestigious Riches contests in all of Nexus during the games hayday. It was designated for levels 66-85 but has since absorbed the now defunct Adventures and Heroes divisions. For years it was considered the pinnacle of player-killing excelence because of it's accessibility, affordability, path balance, and lucrative prizes. At it's peak the Glory carnage would average more than 100 participants per riches-- which would mark the creation of the 4 team system to avoid lag issues. The introduction of "script items" allowed for participants to grossly inflate their base statistics to a point where the strategy of the class greatly shifted. These new items coupled with the change of the poet Atone spell, and new client marked the indefinite downfall of the specific carnage class.

Tops

"Tops" is a term that refers to the elite particapants of a carnage, the Glory Tops, while extremely skilled were not always "maxed" (Level 85). In fact it was a common practice for all non-poets to "under-level" to decieve host and auto-dye while taking advantage of Dog 2 by not maxing.

The Original Carnage of Champions

The original Carnage of Champions (sometime around Yuri 50) consisted of teams of 3, all pit in free for all style against one another in the Bloodlust arena. Dozens of teams entered-- anyone that was anyone in the glory world attended, it was considered the largest congregation of tops, but in the end, VietCong, Peddy, and Worldtalker bested Whiteshadow, Vierge, and Norkle to take the crown (engraved hand items **Glory Carnage Champion** instead of the legend mark seen today) as Glory Carnage Champion. The final outcome represented a changing of the guard as neither team was expected to compete.

Equipment

Working on

Key items

There are a number of key items that glory tops use to give themselves an advantage in carnages. These items play an integral part in the strategy of conservation as many times (especially in the Classical period of glory) carnages would last hours-- and goto 3 rounds of circle matches.

ASV items

It is imperative for fighters to bring their own Sanctuary and Harden Armor items to a glory battle-- because there is no dispell, you'll use the item and get its full worth barring you don't fall in battle. Note that while Poets and Mages can cast these spells, there comes a point in almost every glory carnage where your spellcaster is overrun and can't cast these spells on you, or there are simply no spellcasters left.

While Green potions (Sanctuary), and Brown potions (Armor) can be purchased at potion shops in Buya and Kugnae, it becomes more cost efficent to hunt your own Aqua potions and Muddy potions. Lime potions are great because of their duration, but because you can only hold 4 it is better to bring other variants with the Lime potions to ensure stock.

Hint: A little known nexus secret is that War Poems (Sold for 2,500 in the Northwest corner of Kugnae) cast Sanctuary, you can only buy three at a time, but can hold up to 40.

Hoche

It is wise for all particiapnts in a glory carnage to bring Scrolls of protection, and if accessible and affordable Scrolls of Defense to a match. Due to carrying limits these very important items (they protect from scourge, vex, corruption, and snare)become extremely valuable. Even if you are not maxed and don't plan on surviving for very long, still try and bring some "sops" as they could help ensure your teams victory.

Healing items

Bears livers are essential, but it also very tactical to purchase a large number of Life Blossoms, found at the Monk house. These Blossoms are relativley inexpensive for the amount they heal. A good match will see more than 15 whole Blossoms eaten per top. Considering there are 100 petals per blossom, that is quite a lot.

Special

Sleep Arrows, Faded Stones, Cursed Arrows (for fighters), Explosive Spores, and assorted Candy's are all used in glory. Discretion is used with these items because of their cost but also out of sportsmanship in times of unbalanced teams. Indigo potions are also important and often amature or noob glory participants will forget them.

Strategies

Camping Camping is the strategy of guarding poets and mages in the corner of an arena with warriors. This strategy keeps the guarded spellcasters from relative harm. Often times hosts would force the break of camps to speed up carnages.

Hoche Conservation Because Glory is often a war of attrition, many people try and conserve their scrolls for later use in crunch time or in circles. Usually a scroll will be cast at the start of each round because of the sheer numbers of alive people (making it more probable to get a negative armor spell cast upon you, and easier to be killed). Then the rest are saved for important situations.

Snaring
Snaring is now a fairly useless strategy because of the changes to the Atone spell, but it was once used to act as a lesser of two evils to defend against scourge where Rogues would purposley snare themselves and their teammates to take less of an armor class hit and conserve scrolls of protection or when scrolls were all used.

ASV timing Most of the time teams will start their ASV cycle when the round starts. However because this is a common practice many smart combatants keep track of this time cycle and pounce at poets and mages with sleep arrows and attacks near the end of these intervals in hope to either get the caster or the fighters they are looking after. Many top poets actually stagger their teams asv to make it easier to asv them down the stretch and to avoid "time counters". This is an exceptionally good strategy when your team has 2 talented poets; each of them should asv themselves at 30-60 second interval (this prevents a team from sleeping both poets near the end of their cycle and picking both off).

Speartrap + Ka' Because of the 3500 damage Spear trap does to 0 AC it was once (pre-subaccessories) a great strategy to lay Speartraps in key areas and pounce on the unsuspecting prey with a Ka. It can be a deadly combination and for Yuri's the likes of Whiteshadow and Vierge used this skill to perfection.

Caster Healing It's smart to always have a heal on your poet or mage-- even when they seem to not be in danger, for the most part these casters make or break a glory carnage, so rogues (given that there are more than 1) should be willing to put their lives ahead of their casters.

Barrier sleep' Invented by Norkle the monk and later adapted to almost everyother carnage level (but it works best in Heroes and Glory because there is no dispell) a poet uses Human barrier to trap a target, and then the poet unsheathes a bow and uses sleep arrows to sleep said target.

Poet Will and vita debate

For a number of years it was believed that will was by far the most valuable asset a poet could obtain because of its helpful affects in casting Harden Body. However, a shift in philosophy was brought about by Vietcong through careful demonstration presented strong documentation towards the importance of vita. As such the obtainment of will through items has become a fairly defunct strategy, instead vita accumulation has taken place.

Downfall

The downfall of the Glory Carnage can be attributed to eight specific factors:

  1. Population decline and lack of PK interest
  2. The Introduction of the Life Blossom
  3. The Introduction of "Sub-accessories"
  4. The alteration of the Atone spell which can remove Snare, a key strategy used in Glory endgame.
  5. Decrease in Glory carnages per week
  6. Rare Easter eggs (Raised the permanent base stats of many characters to unfair proportions)
  7. New Client (added input lag to ambushing that wasn't there before. Rogues were hamstrung and kept from being dominant)
  8. The fall of Shadows/Emergence of Rangers and Sleep arrows

Vintage

A vintage theme was implemented by the Carnage department to try and appease some of the longstanding glory die-hards and used as an attempt to try and ressurect the nostalgia, where only "vintage" items could be used. Too many of the die-hards moved on, and the new theme did not catch on with the newer population for the attempt to be considered a success.
